Instagram AI-Generated Profile Label: What AI Influencers Must Do in 2026
If your Instagram account features an AI-generated person, turn on the "AI-generated profile" label in Edit profile. Since August 31, 2026, Instagram limits the reach of AI personas that skip it, while creators who add it themselves keep their reach.

What Changed on August 31, 2026
Instagram renamed its "AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile" and started limiting the reach of AI personas that don't use it. The "AI creator" label had been in testing since earlier in 2026; the new name says more plainly what it means: the person on this profile is not real.
Before
"AI creator" label
An optional label that Instagram trialed earlier in the year. Instagram's announcement does not describe any reach penalty for skipping it.
Since August 31, 2026
"AI-generated profile" label
Expected on every profile that features an AI-generated person. Unlabeled profiles that Instagram detects have their reach limited.
Already used the old label? You'll see the new name on your profile. Instagram asks you to confirm it still fits, or to remove it if it no longer applies.
Who Needs the AI-Generated Profile Label?
You need the label if your profile features an AI-generated person, which covers almost every AI influencer and virtual model. You don't need it if you are a real person who uses AI tools to make your content.
"Creators who simply use AI tools as part of their creative process don't need to add the label."
Add the label
- A virtual influencer whose face is AI-generated
- An AI model or AI persona that is the face of the account
- A brand mascot shown as a realistic AI-generated person
No label needed
- A real creator who edits photos or videos with AI
- AI-written captions, scripts or ideas
- AI-generated backgrounds, b-roll or product shots
Gray area? Instagram's announcement does not cover mixed accounts. Our reading: if an AI-generated person is the face of the account, even part of the time, add the label. Skipping it saves you nothing and puts your reach at risk.
How to Turn On the AI-Generated Profile Label
Go to Edit profile and toggle on "AI-generated profile." It takes under a minute and applies to the whole account.
- 1
Open your profile
Go to the Instagram profile of your AI persona.
- 2
Tap "Edit profile"
The setting sits in the profile editor, not in the post composer.
- 3
Toggle on "AI-generated profile"
This is the account-level label. It is separate from the AI label you can add to individual posts.
- 4
Check your profile
The label then begins to appear on your profile and alongside your content.
Instagram's menus change often. If the toggle isn't where you expect it, check the official announcement and update the app.
Where the Label Appears
According to Instagram, the label appears on your profile and alongside your content. The exception: a post that already has a label saying it was created or edited with AI keeps that label instead.
Third-party detail (not on Instagram's announcement): Unite.AI, citing Instagram's Help Center, reports that the label shows on the profile page, in search results, next to content in Feed, Reels and Stories, and alongside comments or DMs. We could not confirm that list on an official Instagram page, so treat it as likely rather than certain.
In practice, plan for followers to see the label everywhere your persona shows up. That is a reason to make the disclosure part of the persona, as Lil Miquela and other openly virtual influencers do, rather than something you hope people miss.
Does the Label Affect Your Reach?
Adding the label yourself does not reduce your reach, according to Instagram. Skipping it does: Instagram limits the reach of AI personas that are not labeled.
"We will also limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person and do not add this label."
| Your situation | What Instagram says happens |
|---|---|
| You add the label yourself | No change to your profile's reach |
| AI persona, no label, detected | You are notified, reach is limited, and Account Status shows if you are no longer eligible for recommendations |
| Restricted by mistake, appeal accepted | Profile and content become eligible for recommendations again |
Why does that matter so much for an AI influencer? Recommendations are how Instagram shows your posts to people who don't follow you yet. A new persona grows almost entirely through them, so losing eligibility can stall an account.
Instagram does not explain how it detects unlabeled AI-generated profiles. It only says that "unlabeled profiles that we detect will be notified."
What to Do If Your Account Is Restricted
Check Account Status first, then pick one of two fixes: add the label if your profile features an AI-generated person, or appeal if Instagram got it wrong.
1. Open Account Status
It's in your Instagram settings. It shows whether your profile is still eligible to appear in recommendations.
2a. Your profile features an AI-generated person: add the label
This is what Instagram asks for: creators "can and should" apply it from Edit profile. Instagram doesn't publish how quickly recommendations return once you add it, so check Account Status over the following days.
2b. It's a mistake: appeal from Account Status
If you are a real person flagged as AI, appeal the restriction there. If the appeal succeeds, your profile and its content become eligible for recommendations again.
Don't try to get around it. New accounts, hiding the persona's AI status or removing the label to "test" reach all lead to the same place: an unlabeled AI profile, which is exactly what Instagram limits.
Checklist for AI Influencers on Instagram
Five minutes of setup now protects months of growth. Here is what to check on every AI persona account:
- Turn on the "AI-generated profile" label if an AI-generated person is the face of the account.
- Say it in your bio too, in plain words ("virtual creator", "AI-generated persona"). This is our advice, not an Instagram rule.
- Open Account Status once a week for the first month to confirm you are still eligible for recommendations.
- Keep post-level AI labels where they apply: they are separate from the profile label.
- Use the same disclosure on every platform where the persona appears.
- Never use a real person's face or body without their documented consent, and never give the persona a minor-like appearance.
The label is one part of Instagram growth. For content formats, posting rhythm and a month-by-month roadmap, read our guide to growing an AI influencer on Instagram.
AI Labels on Other Platforms
Instagram is not alone: TikTok requires labels on realistic AI content, X bans deceptive AI profiles, and Reddit leaves the rules to each subreddit. If your persona lives on several platforms, apply the strictest rule everywhere.
| Platform | AI rule in brief |
|---|---|
| TikTok | Realistic AI-generated content must be labeled. Content carrying C2PA Content Credentials gets an automatic AI label that you cannot remove. |
| X | Its authenticity rules ban deceptive AI profiles, meaning accounts that mislead people about who or what is behind them. |
| No single platform label. Rules on AI-generated people are set subreddit by subreddit, so read each community's rules before posting. | |
| Fanvue | AI disclosure is mandatory in the bio and on AI-generated media (see our Fanvue rules page). |

FAQ
Does the label reduce reach?
Not according to Instagram. Its announcement says creators who proactively add the AI-generated profile label "will not see a change to their profile's reach." The reach limit targets the opposite case: profiles that feature an AI-generated person and do not add the label.
How do I turn it on?
Open your profile, tap Edit profile and toggle on "AI-generated profile." The label then begins to appear on your profile and alongside your content, except on posts that already carry a label saying they were created or edited with AI.
My account was restricted — how do I appeal?
Open Account Status in your Instagram settings to see whether your profile is no longer eligible to appear in recommendations. If you believe the restriction is a mistake, appeal it there; if the appeal succeeds, the profile and its content become eligible for recommendations again. If your profile does feature an AI-generated person, the fix Instagram asks for is to add the label.
Do I need it if I only use AI editing?
No. Instagram's announcement states that "creators who simply use AI tools as part of their creative process don't need to add the label." The label is for profiles that feature an AI-generated person, such as a virtual influencer whose face is generated by AI.
What happens if I remove it?
Instagram lets you remove the label if it no longer applies, for example if the account stops featuring an AI-generated person. It does not say what happens to a profile that removes it while still featuring an AI-generated person, but that profile would fall back into the group whose reach Instagram says it limits. If your persona is AI-generated, keep the label on.
